Coloma, site of the discovery of that first gold nugget in 1848 that started the famous California Gold Rush, is a must-see part of your adventure itinerary.  Plus, you are right here next to the South Fork of the American River, the most popular family whitewater rafting river in California. The South Fork is also one of the top three, in popularity, rivers to raft in the United States.   Camp with us, or stay in one of the motels in historic Placerville (formerly known as “hangtown” in the gold rush days; that is, before the women, children, and missionaries arrived and changed the name to something more suitable in which to raise a family).

After a visit to Coloma, and a day or two of rafting, then continue your journey to Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, or back to San Francisco.

You can imagine what this beautiful state capital looked like in the 1800’s, during the days of the stagecoach, gold miners, and folks from back east looking for El Dorado, land of the gold.  Sacramento sits at the confluence of the Sacramento and the American Rivers. Nearby is the famous delta regions, full of small islands and waterways, eager to accept campers and adventurers.  At the northern tip of the central valley, the peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range loom in the distance.

After getting your fill of culture and the atmosphere of Old Town Sacramento where you may see an enactment of a wild west “shootout”, head up the hills to the White water rivers.
